Mind you, this was supposed to be the baked variety...

I believe there are little blue pills which solve this problem.

Everything they eat is soft and sweet, like baby food.

They're infants.

This is endearingly amusing.
If you had an opportunity or inclination to visit another US city I think you would find Portland much more to your liking. There are a lot of artisan breads available, decent public transportation, and most of the city (including our many bridges) are very pedestrian/bicycle friendly.

We don't wanna hurt our widdle teeth.

Seriously though, I work in a grocery store bakery and it's almost all like that. We have a few artisan loaves and a couple Portuguese rolls/breads that aren't like that.

Ugh.

Have you considered baking your own? You can get a bread maker for around $50 (last time I checked) if you don't want to do the whole kneading/rising/kneading thing.

Let me guess Kroger?
I'm guessing that came from Kroger? It would match my own experiences, also why I don't get bread there anymore. If you've got a Wal-Mart nearby they actually have rather good bread, usually baked within the last few hours. The "French bread" is at least thick enough to hold its own weight.

As others have pointed out above, there are better breads available, you just have to know where to look. I live in a small city and even here we can do better than that poor, limp, thing. :)
Sandwich shops are a good place for bread, The Atlanta Bread Company and Panera have good bread that actually requires teeth to eat.
