A Night in the Neighborhood

I just was an indirect witness to domestic violence.

My weekly gaming evening was just winding down when the doorbell rang. A 18 year old girl with a bloody nose had collapsed in front of our apartment door and was sobbing uncontrollably. I immediately called the police while the others helped her on a chair and tried to comfort her. When the police arrived, she began to slowly talk again. Apparently her 40-something boyfriend had been drunk and was upset about another neighbor playing Techno music far too loudly, and he thus decided to vent that anger by punching there right on the nose...

The police, after checking the story (and presumably questioning the guy) eventually brought her home. One police officer also told us that a charge is filed automatically in such cases, regardless of what the victim says later... and a good thing too, in my opinion. From what I've heard, all too often the victim rationalizes the incident away and drops all charges. I hope they throw the book at him.

Sadly, women will often find some way to blame themselves, or minimize the partner's culpability. I used to volunteer at a shelter, and it was painful to see the same women coming back time and time again.

Fortunately, she can't retract that charge - it is filed automatically, and requires no further consent from the victim according to current German law.

In cases like hers, even if she gets split off from the one guy, odds are she'll fall in with another just like him.

Are there any laws providing/encouraging psychological help to DV victims? Helping them get to a healthy place has always struck me as more effective than playing abuser whack-a-mole.

I'm so glad you were on the spot to call the police and able to help her out, and I hope that she gets out of that situation ASAP.

She did seem a lot better when she left with the police - still shaken, but no longer incoherent.

Let's see what the public police report says...

Job hunting, basically. Especially the last few weeks have been busy, with one job interview after another...
